Following the success of the Wendron Hub for new ringers, led by our District Chairman Bob Wood, it was suggested that an Open District Practice be arranged. This was held on the evening of Wednesday 17th August at St Gluvias, Penryn.

Although a fairly new venture, there had been many such practices in the Western District over the years. Because of this, it was difficult to predict just how many ringers would attend. In order to optimise attendance, Christine Iles had very helpfully produced a flyer for all towers in the District. This emphasised the objective of providing new ringing experiences for all ringing abilities. As a further incentive to attend, cake, tea and coffee was to be provided!

The 25 ringers who attended the Open Practice came from eight different towers. These were, Constantine, Gwennap, Mawnan, Perran-ar-worthal, Redruth, St Gluvias, St Kevern and Stithians. Giving a representation from the North and South Deanery’s of Carnmarth and that of Kerrier, all within the Western District of TDGR.

Following a welcome to St Gluvias, the ringing requirements of attendees was established. The ringing that followed ensured that all ringing abilities were given equal opportunity. This ranged from single bell skills with a teacher, through rounds and call changes on six and eight bells, to touches of Grandsire Triples. Although the ringing had its moments, the highlight of the evening was probably the refreshment break!  Importantly, and in addition to the home made fare, there was an opportunity to socialise with other ringers from across the Western District. Many old friends were reunited. The group photograph was taken after the refreshments!

There was clear enthusiasm for these occasional open practices to continue, with perhaps the next one being hosted by Debbie and Martin Spittle at Gwennap. By giving the opportunity for different towers to host these events, the whole ringing experience of those attending will be enriched. It would also enable towers who may struggle for ringers to have, if only occasionally, the critical mass necessary to generate new interest in ringing. Also, it will help to keep alive the enthusiasm of our established ringers. Surely, this is something that we are all interested in achieving.
